TECHMAX 35: Carbon2Chem

The European Union has set itself ambitious climate targets: by 2050, Europe is to be the first climate-neutral continent. As part of the “Green New Deal”, the EU Commission plans to reduce net greenhouse gas emissions by 55 percent by 2030 compared to 1990. Carbon dioxide (CO2), which accounts for almost 90 percent of the greenhouse gases, plays a central role in this. Industry in particular is facing the challenge of drastically reducing its CO2 emissions while at the same time finding alternatives to fossil fuels such as coal, oil and natural gas.

The new TECHMAX issue of MAX-Wissen is dedicated to this topic and presents a forward-looking solution: Carbon2Chem - a cornerstone of future “Carbon Capture and Use Technologies” (CCU). Carbon2Chem is a joint project of the steel group thyssenkrupp, the Max Planck Institute for Chemical Energy Conversion, the Fraunhofer Institute for Environmental, Safety and Energy Technology and 14 other partners. This innovative approach converts CO2, which was previously released as waste gas, into a valuable resource for the chemical industry. The process uses waste gases from steel production and converts them into chemicals that can serve as the basis for numerous industrial products.

The booklet explains how this technology works, what challenges it overcomes and what significance it has for achieving climate targets. It is a valuable resource for teachers, students and anyone interested in sustainable solutions in industry. With illustrative examples and background information, it offers a deep insight into one of the most promising technologies in climate protection.

About the MAX booklets

The proven MAX booklets explain basic principles and report on the latest research results from Max Planck scientists. They are aimed at secondary school students and take up topics relevant to the biology, chemistry, geography, physics (including astrophysics) and political education curricula.

The four-page booklets are published in the BIOMAX, GEOMAX and TECHMAX series and are available for download as PDF files. They can also be ordered free of charge as print editions, individually or in class sets. Matching exercises, created by teachers, are available for many of the booklets.
