Max Planck Institute for Chemical Energy Conversion
Stiftstrasse 34-36
45470 Mülheim an der Ruhr
Germany
Follow the A3 or A52 motorway until the "Breitscheid" interchange then follow the sign to Essen BUT then leave the interchange immediately in the direction of Mülheim/Breitscheid (B1). After about 8 km the B1 crosses the River Ruhr and winds up a hill. Just before you reach the crest, move into the left-hand lane and take a sharp left (you will see a sign to the institute). The second road on the right (just before the tram stop) is the Stiftstraße – the institute is located on the left after about 300 m.
Follow the A40 motorway through Essen Tunnel, after 4 km take the Mülheim-Heissen/Mülheim-Zentrum exit which merges into the B1. After a further 5 km the road runs uphill to a large set of traffic lights (Oppspring). After a further 500 m the B1 turns left down into the valley. Continue straight on along the road parallel to the tram lines (you will see a sign to the institute). The second road on the right (just before the tram stop) is the Stiftstraße – the institute is located on the left after about 300 m.
From the Intercity stops in Essen and Duisburg it takes just a few minutes with the S-Bahn (City Rail) or the regional express train to Mülheim Main Station. From there take a taxi (about € 7) or the tram to the institute:
From "Kaiserplatz" take tram 112 (direction Mühleim Hauptfriedhof) to "Mülheim Sportzentrum Südstraße (RWE RR Sporthalle)", ca. 750m walk to the institute.
Or from "Kaiserplatz" tram 112 (direction Oberhausen Landwehr) to "Mühleim Stadtmitte", change into tram 104 and get off at "Max-Planck-Institute (Spielplatz)"
