The German Research Foundation (DFG) will fund 14 new collaborative research centers for four years starting January 1, 2022. Under the leadership of the Department of Chemistry at TU Darmstadt, ten million euros are available for the topic "Iron, upgraded!". In 20 subprojects, the researchers from five universities and the Max Planck Institute for Chemical Energy Conversion have set themselves the goal of influencing iron in its compounds by precisely manipulating the chemical environment in such a way that it can serve as a long-term substitute for rare, toxic or critical metals.
Alexander Schnegg, group leader of the EPR research group at MPI CEC, leads the subproject "In situ and Multi-frequency EPR for FeNC Materials and Model Complexes" and thus helps to optimize the catalytic, magnetic and optical properties of iron in a targeted manner - for sustainable resource utilization.
